The Yellow Leaves Fell

Wednesday was the day for the yellow leaves to fall.

A circle of yellow lace blanketed the front of each house with a yellow tree on Wednesday, up and down the block. Wednesday was the day for yellow leaves to fall. And my boys were more than pleased.

They were thrilled. Bub saw the leaves as a challenge. They were an extra obstacle for pushing his scooter through until it was caked with yellow crispness.

They were an extra reason to get tangled up and topple to the ground.

Bub's leaves were one more reason to get the very most out of every outside second this season. Bub's leaves were feisty and fun. Teebs' leaves; they were more of a wonder.

They were different, all of them. And before grabbing a thick fistful and trying to shove them in his mouth, they were worthy of a slow, careful, examination.

Teebs' leaves were awe inspiring. Rolling, golden, glowing, flowing. Awe inspiring.

Teebs was either tired or stunned, but for a few moments in the yellow leaves he was contained and calm. He was slow. Maybe he was just thinking, but for a few minutes it was nice to see.

Wednesday was the day for the yellow leaves to fall.

We played for as much time as we had to play, savoring every second. And the rest of  Wednesday, and the rest of the week, wasn't too shabby either. Just those few moments outside with Bub and Teebs feels like a huge, unmeasurable chunk of celebration. I get to see them each take in the world in their own unique way and I get to be the observer of how they mesh those two ways together into one sum of brotherly play, and love, uniqueness. I get to watch it all happen, I get to be mom, and that is worth celebrating.

In the coming weeks we are bracing ourselves, we are poised for a long string of celebrations. Thanksgiving, my birthday, Teebs' very first birthday, Christmas---all of these things are big explosions of bright, celebrating energy just waiting with all their potential on the horizon.

And we are so very ready for some celebration.
